The Global Perspective

Think globally, act locally.

Global Systems

What is the global perspective? My experience has been to grab a map of the world, or a globe, and to refer to it frequently with the idea of learning not only where we are in relation to every other place on earth, but to see the world as a unitary whole, a single planet without any boundaries except the distances of the vast oceans separating continents and islands from one another. It is easy in day-to-day affairs of living to loose site of the larger whole and to think and act in terms that are primarily defined by local contexts and situations that have little or no positive relevance to any larger framework in the world. Newer satellite based world maps, such as the night-time map that shows the lights of human activity over extended periods of time, provide even more dramatic emphasis to the idea of a single world system. I also like to regularly view a map of the earth in relation to the solar system, that is itself situated in its own gallactic and inter-gallactic context.

The global perspective does not come to us in a dream or in a childhood based upon our personal subjective experiences. It is derived from experience in the world, with the world, and in relation to the world. It requires a certain openness, tolerance and a willingness to experience things in a different, and even sometimes disembodied, manner. Most of my own worldly experience was achieved through military service, then through education and a half-baked career in anthropological and cross-cultural research. I've never been a world traveler, or even much of a traveler at all. I'm a real home-body and introvert, but this has not stopped me from seeking, and to some extent, finding, experiences in a larger world context that have transcended my own narrow cultural boundaries as a traditional American.
